Beginning Knitting with MYS Staff.
During the first 2 classes, you will learn to cast on, knit, purl, increase, decrease & cast off. During the 3rd class session, you will pick out an easy project, learn to read knitting instructions & work on your chosen project for the remainder of the course. Fee: $78 per session for four weeks. Note: All materials must be purchased from Mosaic Yarn Studio, Ltd. Beginning Knitting can be taken twice.

Intermediate Knitting (and Crocheting)
You will learn more advanced techniques of your choice. For example, you can choose a simple cabled sweater pattern, a fair isle pattern,an intarsia pattern – the choice is yours! This class can betaken over and over and over and over..

Try out Round Mountain’s fabulous “bird yarn” or choose your favorite fingering weight yarn. The shawlette is knit on the bias, giving the classic chevron pattern an unusual twist. June will get you started with a cable cast on and show you some unusual stitches along the way.

My First Sweater (That Fits) with Darlene Joyce

Use Ann Budd’s book, The Knitter’s Handy Book of Patterns and the yarn of your choice to make a basic pullover sweater or cardigan in any size.  The set-in-sleeve is flattering to almost all body types.  Couture techniques are taught to refine your knitting repertoire, including measuring your body, adjusting the pattern, paired increases/decreases, selvedge edges, sloped bind off, seaming, and picking up stitches.

Cinnie with June Sorensen

Whether you like it long or cropped or with short or long sleeves, this cardigan is sure to become a staple in your wardrobe.  You can throw it over a simple tee or cami for a casual look or use it as a little “cover up” for a cocktail dress.  Chose your favorite dk weight yarn and a size US 6 needle and you are ready to go!

Chunkified Retreat Shawl with Kate Joyce

Learn how to make Kate’s original retreat design using super chunky yarn and a size US 15 needle.  Techniques include kfb increases, double yarn overs and decreases.

Basic Socks with Darlene Joyce

Knit a basic sock using fine needles and special sock yarn. You will learn to use double pointed needles, turn a heel and create a gusset. The instructor will discuss ways to ensure a proper fitting sock.

Enjoy Michigan Cowl with Emily Hrobsky

This welting technique involves slipping stitches.  Each row is worked with only one color!  After you get the hang of it, it is easy!


Sun. January 22, 2 – 4  p.m. Fee: $32; 2 hour class

Botanic Hat with Courtney Buckalew

Steven West designed this hat after a wooden pavilion roof in the Chicago Botanic Gardens.  Using a slip stitch pattern, this hat is knit in the round.  Have fun playing with the colors!  Sizing for the whole family.

Rib Warner with Georg Luxton

Elongated or not, the choice is yours.  Learn to make Elizabeth Zimmermann’s rib warmer, adding unique features like an I-cord, a stand up collar or buttonholes.  Pattern available at MYS.


Wed. February 8, 22 & March 8, 7 – 9  p.m. Fee: $66; 3 week class


Intermediate Crochet with MYS Staff. This class is for crocheters of any skill
level. It is tailored around what you know and what you’d like to learn. If you’re new to crochet,
you’ll get started with chain, single, and double crochet stitches. Already know the basics? Then
learn to read patterns and stitch diagrams. If you want to learn classics like granny squares,
doilies, motifs, or filet crochet, only your imagination is the limit! Come prepared with a prject
of your choosing, and let’s get started. All yarn must be purchased from MYS.

stitch dictionariesUsing Stitch Dictionaries  with Darlene Joyce

Learn how to use a stitch dictionary to plan a scarf, cowl or baby blanket.  Students will learn about yarn  and hook selection, gauge and how to calculate stitch multiples to get the desired size.  Darlene designed the Vibrations Cowl and the Azalea Cowl (see free pattern on page 7) from this book.  Book required:  Basic Crochet Stitch.  Please purchase from MYS.  Bring a variety of hooks.

crochet sock2Crochet Toe Up Socks  with Darlene Joyce.

Learn how to crochet socks from the toe up using a basic single crochet stitch and a size D crochet hook and sock yarn.  (You can also do a sport weight version if you prefer)  Students will learn how to fit the socks.   No book required.  Darlene will provide the pattern with pictures of every step.


Wed. December 28 to January 4, 5:30 – 7 p.m. Fee: $55; 2 week class

Trellis Mittens  with Darlene Joyce.

Learn how to make a mitten with a beautiful trellis center.  The mitten starts from the top and goes down, making it easy to custom size.  Patterns calls for 200 yards of worsted weight yarn.  Darlene’s sample is in Filatura Zara.


Thurs. February 12 & 19, 2 – 4 p.m. Fee: $50; 2 week class


Intro to Frame Weaving  with Georg Luxton


Using a frame loom, students will learn some basics of weaving, including how to warp the frame, how to create some simple stitches and how to let the design process flow while making a simple wall hanging.  No experience needed.  14” x 10” Frame is  $45.

Intro to Rigid Heddle Weaving:  Getting to Know Your Loom  with Georg Luxton

Learn the parts of the loom and weaving terminology.  Students will assemble their loom, warp it and do a balanced weave using worsted weight yarn purchased from MYS.  This basic class is a spring board for more advanced weaving technique classes to come!

Class Policies

Materials: Except when noted, yarns must be purchased from Mosaic Yarn Studio. Come in as soon as possible to pick out your supplies in case we need to order something. Students receive a 10% discount on all class materials.

Registration: Registration is required for all classes. 100% of the class fee is due at registration. You may register by phone via Visa/Mastercard/American Express or use our online secure shopping cart. Of course, you can always register in person!

Class Minimum: A minimum number students is required in order for a class to run. You will be notified one week in advance if the minimum is not met and your deposit will be refunded.

Cancellation: Store credit can be issued for your deposit if we are notified one week before the start of class. After this point, deposits are non-refundable. Out of courtesy to our instructors, no make-up classes are given.
