Road Trip Mystery 2021: Maryland kits

We had so much fun taking our virtual road trip last year, that we decided to do it again! This year we're headed to Maryland, The Old Line State, also know as America in Miniature. We'll continue our celebration of knitting and local yarn shops and American history and natural wonders and Maryland landmarks as we go.  So what's the mystery?  Where we'll go next, of course! And our inspiration for each leg.... And how that translates into knitting a beautiful shawl. We hope you'll join us on this grand knitting adventure and knit along.

Cynthia Spencer & Valerie Reed

We are your knitting tour guides, Cynthia Spencer and Valerie Reed.  Cynthia is both a knitting designer (Really Clear Designs) and a yarn shop owner (Stitch Your Art Out) who has lived in PA for her entire life. Valerie is a tech-editor and number-crunching guru who grew up in Maryland but has spent the past 20+ years living in and exploring PA. We're both experienced knitters with a love of beautiful yarn, local yarn shops, and the wonderful community of people that share our

love of knitting.  We hope you'll knit along with us as we create a beautiful shawl.

Beauty is All Around Us

The trusses of a bridge, a beautiful flower, a national landmark, the winding trail up ahead.... just about anything can be inspiration for making something beautiful.  Last year, we explored Cynthia's home state of Pennsylvania. This year, we headed just a little south to Maryland, the state where Valerie was born and spent her childhood.  Every stitch pattern we've included is inspired by a shape or pattern or color we've seen in the beauty that surrounds us all.

So What's the Project?

We've designed a lovely shawl with a variety of stitch patterns inspired by many of the sights and wonders of Maryland. The shawl is a rather unique shape that is a cross between a triangle and a scarf. A pre-release version of the pattern is available now on Ravelry (please get it through "in-store sales" from your LYS, if you have one). The Start Your Engines section will be released on April 17, 2021 in celebration Local Yarn Shop Day. Future legs of the journey will be released every two to three weeks through the end of July. Each leg will contain two options for the next section of the shawl (one designed by Cynthia, the other by Valerie), setting every knitter up for a grand choose-your-own knitting adventure. Each option is a creative tribute to a landmark, or historical event, or region that can be encountered on a Road Trip through Maryland. See the yarn requirements to determine how many skeins of yarn you'll need.

Baah Yarns

We welcome Baah Yarn as this year's yarn partner!

Mira, the owner and founder of Baah Yarn, has an extensive background in Art. Born in Indonesia, a country filled with beautiful colors and art, she grew a great appreciation for it. Many of the yarn colors are inspired by the art and beautiful colors from the island of Bali. Mira studied Graphic Design at Cal State Northridge and graduated with a Bachelor of Art degree.

She started hand dyeing yarn for fun in her kitchen in Oceanside California. During difficult times in 2011, she went door to door of local yarn shops in San Diego, Los Angeles, & Orange County. She was beyond excited to get her first actual sale! Her feeling of joy and gratification was beyond belief. She continued to pursue her passion of sharing her happy colors and started attending TNNA with the help of her friends and family. Baah Yarn is a family owned business that moved to Las Vegas, NV in 2019 and they work with a wonderful team of 6 people. They strive to bring happy hand dyed colors to you.

Please purchase the pattern for the Road Trip Mystery 2021: Maryland through us.
